about

Planiglobii Terrestris is a collection of old world and culture style tracks that try to capture a sense of discovery, tradition, and adventure. To bring the listener to an unknown time an place.

Not since my story of "The Mongol Princess" have I blatantly exploited, devoured, and molested such a wide range of worldly instruments.
I have come to find that I enjoy playing plucked string sounds on a keyboard nearly as much as the piano. Many instruments were certainly not played/used in the traditionally intended method, as I'm making up my own traditions. There is nothing academic about this release. It's pure joy of exploration.

There were many victims on this journey: I played a lot of Celtic guitar (probably too much), a load of 2 types of violins (Balkan and Middle Eastern), got my accordion on with both Musette and Balkan style, some plucked classical guitar, several stringed instruments from Greece and Turkey (Baglamas, Jubus, Oud, and my personal favorite the Bouzouki, on the DCD inspired "Veil Desertus"), the wonderful Aremenian Duduk also on that track, I used a few female voice samples from Egypt and The Balkans, programmed a few tribal beats, even exploited some Irish flutes and bagpipes, banged on my keys playing Timpani drums on the title track, had a joyful time with xylophone tones and didn't need sticks, picked at the harp on the final track, gravitated back to the piano on a couple, and certainly cheated here and there with some loops.

This whole endeavour is a result of my loving the worldly sounds of one of my favorite bands of all time: Dead Can Dance, as well as the sense of adventure I have always felt when I enjoyed the visual and musical spectacle of a Cirque du Soliel show.

If I can evoke any small escape or sense of wonder to the listener with these songs, then I have achieved what I wanted.
Let's set sail for adventure!
